Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to pilot the “Indore model” of waste management in one municipal zone to improve waste segregation and reduce the quantity of garbage reaching landfill sites.

During a review of civic services with the MCD officials, the L-G expressed concern that around half of Delhi’s municipal waste is still not segregated at source and nearly 50% of the garbage generated every day ends up at landfill sites.

Mr. Sandhu said the waste management system of the Indore Municipal Corporation, that has helped the city top the national cleanliness rankings several times, could serve as a model for Delhi. He said fresh waste must be processed scientifically to prevent new waste from piling up.
