Prem Singh Golay attended 8th Sarathi Samman Divas at Manan Kendra. This is what he stated in a social media post.

“Delighted to attend the 8th Sarathi Samman Diwas at Manan Kendra.

The occasion is a tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and invaluable contribution of the Sarathi community to Sikkim’s progress. During my address, I recalled that Sarathi Samman Diwas was born out of struggle and our commitment to honour those who stood with us during difficult times.

I reaffirmed that our Government believes in fulfilling its promises. The first Sarathi Diwas was celebrated on 27 July 2019, just two months after the formation of the SKM Government, and since 2020 it has been officially observed by the Government of Sikkim. In 2022, we formally adopted the title “Sarathi”, recognising drivers as trusted partners in Sikkim’s progress. Today, our Sarathis are the true and undeclared ambassadors of Sikkim.

I highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by our Government for the welfare of the Sarathi community, including the establishment of the All Sikkim Sarathi (Chalak) Welfare Board, educational assistance for their children, housing support, health and medical insurance, vehicle distribution, expanded parking infrastructure, improved interstate transport facilities, and several other welfare measures aimed at enhancing their livelihoods.

During my address, I also announced that, subject to the prescribed eligibility criteria, one eligible family member of a Sarathi who loses their life in a road accident will be provided employment by the Government, reaffirming our unwavering commitment to the welfare and security of the Sarathi community.

I also highlighted the recent Reciprocal Transport Agreement with the Government of West Bengal, under which the counter-signature permit quota for Sikkim taxis has been doubled from 3,000 to 6,000, creating greater opportunities for our Sarathis and improving interstate transport services.

I urged all our Sarathis to continue upholding the highest standards of road safety, professionalism, honesty, and courteous service. As the first point of contact for countless visitors, they carry not only passengers but also the pride, image, and reputation of Sikkim. I encouraged them to preserve the trust reposed in them and continue serving as exemplary ambassadors of our State.

Our Government remains firmly committed to safeguarding the dignity, welfare, and aspirations of the Sarathi community. Together, let us continue working towards a Sunaulo, Samriddha, and Samarth Sikkim.
