REC AND SECI SIGNS AN MOU FOR DISTRIBUTION OF SOLAR LANTERNS
March 19, 2013 : Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd (RECL) and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) signed an MoU for distribution of about 1.5 lakh Solar Lanterns under the Sustainable Development initiatives, in poorly electrified areas of districts declared as backward by the planning commission. RECL is a leading Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Power and SECI is Section-25 Company under the administrative control of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
By promoting the usage of solar lanterns, it is expected that availability of lighting for household purposes will have a positive impact on the quality of life, economic conditions and study hours for rural children, besides avoiding usage of kerosene.
SECI officials mentioned that the assistance from REC has helped to kick-start the program, which is a much larger program and targets distribution of over 6 lakh lanterns across the country. SECI will implement the project through the State Nodal Agencies.
