The MoU was signed by P J Thakkar, Director (Technical), RECL and Rakesh Kumar, Director (PS) SECI, in the presence of the Rajeev Sharma, CMD RECL and Shri Rajendra Nimje, MD, SECI and other senior officials of the two companies.  REC has partnered with SECI for this large scale project for providing home-lighting in the backward / tribal  areas. The project entails, distribution of about 1.5 lakh solar lanterns of advanced design, which will make a positive impact on about 750,000 lives. Each lantern will have a chargeable battery and separate solar module.

By promoting the usage of solar lanterns, it is expected that availability of lighting for household purposes will have a positive impact on the quality of life, economic conditions and study hours for rural children, besides avoiding usage of kerosene.

SECI officials mentioned that the assistance from REC has helped to kick-start the program, which is a much larger program and targets distribution of over 6 lakh lanterns across the country. SECI will implement the project through the State Nodal Agencies.
