LOWEST FATAL ACCIDENTS ON HOLI THIS YEAR SINCE 2007,1447 DRUNK DRIVERS PROSECUTED

Lowest Fatal Accidents on Holi since the year 2007.

  • 1,447 Drunk Drivers prosecuted.
  • 13,015 prosecutions on the day of Holi.
  • 881 vehicles impounded.
  • 491 drivers arrested.

 

Delhi Traffic Police planned and made elaborate arrangements for the festival of Holi, celebrated on 17.03.2014, in the city and ensured that the festival is observed in a safe and orderly manner.

About 200 teams of Traffic police officials were stationed at different locations in the city to take action against drunken driving, over speeding, reckless driving, zig-zag driving, dangerous driving, red light jumping, triple riding, minor driving, driving/riding without helmet, performing stunts on two-wheelers and other traffic offences. Joint checking against drunken driving was undertaken jointly by Delhi Traffic Police, PCR and local staff of respective police stations.  Additionally, Chase & Challan motorcycles and cranes were also used in the special task of prosecuting drunk drivers and towing away improperly/unauthorizedly parked vehicles and also vehicles impounded during the drive.

Total 13,015 prosecutions were made by Traffic Police on 17.03.2014 which included 2090 for drunken driving (including 643 prosecutions of registered vehicle owners who allowed their vehicles to be driven by unauthorized persons/drunk drivers).  For prosecutions against drunken driving, 4 were HTV drivers, 29 were MGV/LGV drivers, 3 were Gramin Sewa drivers, 212 were car/jeep drivers, 1112 were two wheeler riders, 42 were TSR drivers, 34 were taxi drivers, 8 were Delivery Van drivers and 3 were other vehicle drivers. A total of 881 vehicles were impounded during the drive.

In addition, 1544 persons were prosecuted for red light jumping, 385 for wrong/improper parking, 139 for dangerous driving, 249 for overspeeding, 1464 for triple riding, 5633 for rider/pillion without helmet, 780 for not using seat belt, 210 for one-way violations and 25 for not having valid driving licence.

The presence of policemen at strategic locations and strict traffic enforcement also resulted in the lowest fatal accidents in the city on the day of Holi till now, as only 5 fatal accidents were reported from all over the city in which 6 persons lost their lives. This was against 14 fatal accidents that took place on the day of Holi in the year 2013, total 13 fatal accidents in 2012, total 11 fatal accidents in 2011 and total 15 fatal accidents in the year 2010. The largest number of casualties on Holi was in the year 2006 when there were 20 fatal accidents in which 22 people were killed.
