LG NAJEEB JUNG INSPECTS INTERCEPTOR SEWER PROJECT AND WATER ATM SETUP AT DWARKA
Lt. Governor visits Dwarka; inspects the Interceptor Sewer Project and water ATMs being set up
Lt. Governor Shri Najeeb Jung today visited Dwarka and inspected the Interceptor Sewer Project and water ATMs being installed. He was accompanied by CEO DJB, DJB engineers, Secretary (PWD) and other senior government officials.
The DJB has undertaken the “Interceptor Sewer Project” to improve the quality of water flowing into the Yamuna, by commissioning wastewater intercepting sewers in a 59 km length along the three major drains in the city, namely, Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdara. The project involves interception of sewage flowing in around 190 subsidiary small drains and conveying it to the nearest Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to ensure that only treated sewage is discharged into major drains. This would ensure that approximately 70% of the pollution load going into the river Yamuna is prevented.
As part of this project, the first milestone to be achieved is that the waste water of Palam Drain in Dwarka, shall be taken into Package-1 of the Interceptor Sewer and diverted to Pappankalan Sewage Treatment Plant by completing the following works. By trapping the Palam drain, 9 to 10 MGD discharge, shall be sent to the Pappankalan Sewage Treatment Plant.
I. Construction of Interceptor Chamber I/C Bar screen and Silt pit at confluence point of Palam Drain and Najafgarh drain.
II. The Interceptor Sewer from Palam Drain to New Pump House near Pappankalan Sewage Treatment Plant.
III. Rising main from Pump House to Pappankalan Sewage Treatment Plant.
To replace the use of ground water with treated effluent for irrigation of the district parks, DJB has also asked the DDA to use treated effluent which can be spared from the Pappankalan Sewage Treatment Plant. Accordingly, DDA has set up their infrastructure to carry treated effluent from Pappankalan STP to the district parks. After commissioning of the Package-1 of the Interceptor Sewer Project at Dwarka, about 5-10 MGD of treated effluent shall be released to DDA for the irrigation of the district parks in Dwarka.
While inspecting the facility at Dwarka today, the Lt. Governor expressed his satisfaction, and urged those involved to ensure that the June 2015 deadline to complete the entire project is met.
As part of his visit to Dwarka, the Lt. Governor also visited the decentralised drinking water treatment plant, based on RO treatment technology, with water dispensing machines (water ATMs) at Sector III, Sahyog Vihar, Dwarka. These water ATMs run on solar Power. These ATMs being set up at Dwarka, will supply water to Sahyog Vihar, a resettlement colony, and are expected to cater to a population of about 20,000 people. This is part of the project to set up 500 water ATMs all across the city, much on the lines of Sawda Ghewra. These Water ATMs operate as cashless vending machines, through rechargeable smartcards.
