Exclusive Interview of Pameli Kayal with Editor Tarun Sharma
Editor: Your name is unique Pameli, what does it means.
Pk: Estuary of Tar river flowing east into the Pamilico Sound (inlet of Atlantics between the mainland and off shore Islands)
Editor: What does Architecture means to you.
PK: Architecture is a frozen music. This is definitely a bookish sentence…but the elements that are used to beautify any facade has rhythm in it….followed by harmony.
Architecture is not just about the aesthetics of any building but how well the space is planned. Architecture for me is synchronizing the inner comfort level for the user…harmonizing with Nature….and rest is history…the best example I can provide is : Falling Water by Frank LLoyd Wright.
Editor: Which Indian city you think is more adorable in terms of architecture and why.
PK: Chandigarh…..its one of the best planned city in the Country by Le Corbusier. He implemented the concept of Town planning in its best possible manner. The city is maintained in terms of cleanliness which makes any outsider feel Welcomed.
Editor:Please tell us more about your work.
PK: There are couple of paintings that are going on presently.Elvis Presley is one I am presently focused on. I am also developing an entire series on Shiva and Figuritives on Mohenjodaro style – Dancing Lady format …Also there are some poster works which I am yet to start.
I am also working on development of a Dairy brand – Milky Fresh. We plan to open 200 retail outlets of the same and thus setting high standards, keeping in mind the International Market. Along with that there is a project in Goa and there is Dome NSCI beautification work, which is yet to start.
As I have been an Architectural journalist in the past..the flare for literature continues and I am working on my Fiction of which you will soon get to know. 🙂
Editor: You have drawn lot of celebrities on your canvas, which is your best celebrity which according to you rule the canvas and why.
PK: Tony Montana – Scarface…is very close to my heart. I fell in love with that and I still don’t know why.
Apart from that the b’day gift for Dr. Shahrukh Khan has been one of my favorite….It still sits high at the bar counter of his residence – Mannat..Dr. Khan is one of my favorite face…because he is not just as an Artist, but also a person of supreme intelligence, passion, energy, and a compassionate human being. He is an inspiration and I really would love to be a good Human being like him.
Editor: When you paint what is it from a painter prospective you visualize.
PK: I just go with the flow of my heart..my heart tells me if something would look beautiful…I just do it…and yes good music, that helps me build the rhythm of my work.
Editor: 3D architecture is relatively very popular these days what’s your say on that.
PK: Technology has taken a beautiful leap. It has made life easy for all designers to share their vision to their clients. Not only that this has also helped in creating new case study subjects like Lilypod etc. Its a blessing for Futuristic design approach.
Editor: You are a multi-talented person, please tell about some of your interests which you have a passion for.
PK; Art for me is meditation. In any state of mind – happy, sad, disheartened…I just pick up my brush and put on the music…and I get disconnected from the world. I forget to eat, drink, sleep when I paint.
I eat, drink, sleep – creativity….anything that is creative gives me a high…be it Interior Architecture or Art or Movie making or Literature. I was moved by the sets of Black ( movie by Sanjay leela Bhansali) thus I worked as an assistant with Mr. Omang Kumar (known for Art direction and Director of Marykom) on the sets of a movie called – Saawariya.
Editor: Who are the top 5 Architectural contractors of India according to you and what is it that make them so.
PK: My Dad had made me fall in love with design and architecture. He used to work late nights and I used to sit down by his side with my maths book whilst the whole intent was curiosity about why he makes those lines. When everyone else used to be at playground after school or on weekends I used to be at his sites or by his drafting table trying to learn what he was making.Love for art since i was 2yrs old (My Mother says I was 2 years old when i started scribbling on the skirting) made me gradually understand the essence of lines and what planning is all about in architecture. The more i Understood more it fascinated me. I was pro with usage of 0.1 Rotring pens in my 6th standard and used to happily use it in my paintings…It was Dad indeed…who made me fall in love with architecture…and ever since I understood the indepth meaning of it I have been an ardent fan of only one architect and I am proud to say I am his student : Padmashree Hafeez Contractor…He, has not only taught me a lot in Architecture and Interiors but it was he who saw my love towards art. He was the one who launched me as an artist in Kala Ghoda Festival and be a speaker at a press conference on behalf of him back in 2008. It was he who noticed my solace in literature and made me start writing as a journalist….I may sound biased…but for me My Dad and Hafeez Sir it is.. 🙂
Editor: Architecture designing is dying slowly in our country, what is the support you being into the same profession seek from the ruling Government.
PK: I dont think so…. A new era always develops when the old one is redundant…and as long as we have Architects like Mr Contractor…it cannot die. Gotham City has been his and my Dream….and it will soon happen.
Editor: Is Indian Government buildings lacking Architectural sense according to you, if yes what can be done on this to improve.
PK: Not at all….else the beautiful monuments of India wouldnt have been the CBD’s of metros…they are main offices of well known Companies. Look at Rashtrapati Bhavan, it is so beautifully illuminated at night, look at the South Mumbai..I completely Disagree. Simplistic forms are been adopted for soothing aesthetics
Editor:You are an architectural designer for lot of Bollywood celebrities, what according to you celebrities seek in their Home interiors.
PK: Home is where your heart dwells. At the end they look forward to come home with their own people and share all good bad moments at work… Comfort and coziness is everyone’s priority. Along with that some unique features they love to add…as per their hobbies, need, comfort, daily needs…but basic need is being simplistic and elegant
