Dr.Shikha Sharma emininent diet expert excl. interview with our Editor-in-Chief Tarun Sharma
“CELEBRITIES ARE VERY VERY VERY DISCIPLINED ,FOCUSED AND GOAL DRIVEN AND THEY ALWAYS GETS RESULTS” SAYS DR.SHIKHA SHARMA CELEBRITY NUTRITION AND DIET EXPERT AND MUCH MORE IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF TARUN SHARMA
Editor: Please tell us about your current role .
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
My current role in the organisation is basically a person who does ‘ INNOVATION ‘ ,so whether it is creating a new plan in the medical side or creating a new thought leadership on what NUTRITION or what HEALTHCARE or what PREVENTIVE HEALTH NUTRITION should be all about and those communications we put on our FACEBOOK or our website, basically NEW KIND OF COMMUNICATION that is what i do apart from the training to our in-house people, mentoring people within the organisation and mentoring the team within the organisation that is in broad terms my current role.
Editor: How did Weight Management and Nutrition subjects attracted you in other words to put what enticed you to these.
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
I was originally working as a Jr. Resident doctor in the Department of Cardiology at G.B.Pant Hospital,New Delhi. And as a Jr. Resident you are supposed to execute the work of a Sr. doctors ,basically we are on the ground people who execute the senior doctors advice on prescriptions in the wards and there i realized while working as a Jr. resident doctor that while we were medicating the patients and post surgically we were also treating them ,but in terms of the basic reasons of Heart Attacks i.e wrong diet, wrong lifestyle nobody was guiding the patients on that and that wasn’t given enough focus. So i realized that the basic cause of Heart Attacks wasn’t given the focus and maybe I should look at how we can help the patients to improve there own health.
Since i was Doctor,i had no idea about” NUTRITION” so i started doing a lot of ‘SELF STUDY’ and i started reading about Nutrition ,about the ‘CLINICAL APPLICATIONS OF NUTRITION’ ,so i didn’t only read ‘MODERN NUTRITION’ ,I read up ‘VEDIC NUTRITION’ ,i also read up about ‘CHINESE CONCEPT OF NUTRITION’ .So i tried to actually understand Nutrition from all different angles and not just from ‘CALORIC CONCEPT,FOOD CONCEPT BUT CLINICAL ASPECT OF NUTRITION’ or “THE HUMAN ASPECTS OF NUTRITION”
Editor:You are a known Nutrition and Weight management expert with lot of celebrities and politicians as your clients,What is the difference you find in a common person coming to you and a celebrity approaching you for a same concern i.e weight management and diet.
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
There is only one difference and the difference is that people who are celebrity are ‘VERY VERY VERY DISCIPLINED’ and they always get results and also they are ‘VERY FOCUSED’ ,’VERY GOAL DRIVEN’.Other people lack discipline but celebrities are very disciplined and follow 100% regime. The Ex PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA was our client and other list cant be shared because of sheer privacy.
Editor:In metro’s weight, diet and stress are the main factors influencing a person’s health ,what’s your advice to the people on this, how can they cope up with the same.
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
firstly they should be willing to change because the truth is that if they are living in a metro and have a high stress life then they cannot eat the way they are eating because it will only damage more,so we have to be willing to improve the way we are eating.
Secondly Awareness, awareness on what is HEALTHY and what is NON- HEALTHY.
Third is a little bit of i would i say Creativity & CO-OPERATION within the family to get in new recipes to try them as a family and the use them in future because i find a lot of resistance family to eat healthy,So if the husband has a heart problem he will eat healthy ,but the wife and kids will not eat healthy ,so eventually husband feels like a patient or vice-versa the case in case of wife.
So little bit of CO-OPERATION and more of i would say CREATIVITY in looking for new recipes & fun recipes at home.
Editor: INDIA’S majority population is malnourished what according to you should be the steps that the Indian Government Health Department should take apart from there ongoing programs to make INDIA FREE OF MALNOURISHMENT,
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
First thing MALNUTRITION happens because of DIARHOEA which happens because of unclean water ,So first step is availability of clean drinking water which will sort a lot of problems, secondly whatever FOOD is produced in a local geographic area there should be processing or factories to convert that food into some nutritional products .For example if there is a Jaggery producing area then the jaggery bricks or jaggery peanuts should be produced near the factory and not far kms away because 40% of the food is lost and wasted in transition. So India loses billions of Dollars of money in just transition of goods and is not available for the local population. So if there are factories which can convert that raw food into something which is durable and long lasting ,which has a longer shelf life then a lot of malnutrition problems can be solved.

Editor: What should an ideal diet comprise of for a normal working person’s in a metro.
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
We should use mix of different ATTA’S (RAAGI,OAT,CHANNA,SOYA) ,Use of more traditional CHUTNEY’S (Green Chutney’s/Dhania/Pudina) should be used because they are rich in Enzymes,Use traditional salt more often i.e Black salt,we are using too much of processed salt and sugar. We should also include more FRUITS in our diet which we are not using at present ,Water melon ,musk melon, peach, pommegranete, plums etc .apart from commonly used mangoes and bananas.
Indian’s don’t eat enough salad i think so at-least ,i would say at-least twice a day one should have one bowl of lunch ,one bowl of dinner salad.Beside cucumber ,tomato, onion you could also have steamed broccoli, boiled peas so this all becomes a warm salad.
Dinner should be light and people should have the dinner immediately after coming home from work instead of having fillers like namkeen ,sandwich etc.
Editor:Describe your success mantra in one line.
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
“Dont give up HOPE & WORK HARD is my success mantra.”
Editor: Your valuable message for the visitor’s of portal.
Dr. Shikha Sharma:
I would say that in the entire life one can earn and create and buy many phones , jewellery, vacations, properties ,but if one loses health than it’s like a living hell.So one should invest in own health because people who have lost health knows the pain of how much hellish it can become after losing health and then nothing can help you to regain it nor your property nor you valuables, jewelry etc.Previously it used to be a insecure world but such is not the case in today times, People have wealth but don’t spend it on health and instead spent it on luxury and expect medical facility to come as a free package.
