New Delhi: An interactive meeting with more than 35 trade unions of construction sector workers was convened by Labour Minister Sh. Gopal Rai, on today in order to understand and gather first hand information regarding welfare of large number of construction workers working in Delhi. After interactive meeting Sh. Gopal Rai directed the Labour Department to simplify the registration process of labourers for various benefits of welfare scheme.
Presently the Delhi Construction Board has 18 welfare schemes and sufficient cess funds to the tune of 1628 Crores, which have not been adequately disbursed to the registered construction workers. The board organizes site registration campus and has registered more than 2.5 lac construction workers, out of which 1.10 lac workers have renewed their registration. So far, 328 registration camps have been organized by Board and Labour Department jointly. Shri Rai directed that more such registration camps need to be organized so that large number of workers registered themselves which will help extended benefits of various welfare schemes.
While expressing his anguish for the meagre benefits extended by the Labour Department, Delhi Labour Minister instructed to revise and increase various entitlements of monitory benefits under present welfare schemes of the Board for the benefit of construction workers. Shri Rai also emphasised to have a proper cess collection mechanism in place in a transparent manner. He said the due cess also to be need to be collected from various bodies including construction establishments/companies, so that more benefits can be extended to construction workers to improve the life of workers.
Delhi Labour Minister also underlined the need and necessity of skill development to create more job opportunities for making the living of workers better. The expenditure on skill needs can also be met from cess funds of the Board in respect construction workers and their family members.
