DYAL SINGH COLLEGE ,DELHI MAY BE RENAMED
New Delhi/28 November: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today proposed that all political parties should unanimously pass a resolution in the Vidhan Sabha against renaming of Dyal Singh College in Delhi.
A representation in this regard was submitted to Speaker Rana K P Singh with a request that the matter be taken up urgently today as the sentiments of the entire Punjabi community were associated with this issue. The representation said that a united approach on this issue was the need of the hour.
The proposed resolution stated that the Dyal Singh Evening College was established in Delhi after the partition. It was recognized by Delhi University in 1978 but now the Governing Committee of the College had decided to rename it as VandeMatram Mahavidyala. It said this draconian decision had sent out a wrong message to all who were concerned about the legacy of Dyal Singh Majithia. It said there was even a feeling of anger and discontentment amongst the Sikh community.
It further added that a big library was established in Lahore (Pakistan) by Sardar Dyal Singh Trust in 1898 and also a college named after S. Dyal Singh was established in Lahore in 1910. It said both these institutions were running smoothly without any trouble in that country.
The proposed resolution further added that S Dyal Singh Majithia had a very rich legacy. His Grandfather was a commander in the army of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. His father S. Lehna Singh was also a great personality who was fully devoted to the social work and welfare activities. S Dyal Singh was a great nationalist and reformist who laid the foundations of The Tribune newspaper and Punjab National Bank.
It added that the governing committee of college took an arbitrary decision of renaming the college. It asked the centre government to step in to save the legacy of S. Dyal Singh Majithia and issue appropriate directions to the Committee for the same
