BHEL bags major contract for 500 MW thermal power plant;

NTPC reposes confidence, places Rs.1,143 Crore order for

setting up thermal unit at Vindhyachal

New Delhi, May 31: Reposing confidence in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)’s proven technological excellence, NTPC Ltd. has placed a major order on the company for supply and installation of the main plant package for a power project in Madhya Pradesh, involving one thermal power generating unit of 500 MW.

Valued at Rs.1,143 Crore, the contract envisages setting up a 1×500 MW thermal power generating unit at NTPC’s Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station (STPS), in Madhya Pradesh. The order reinforces BHEL’s leadership status in the execution of thermal power projects involving supply of state-of-the-art equipment, suited to Indian coal and Indian conditions.

With the present order, 86 numbers of 500 MW thermal sets have been contracted by BHEL in the country so far. The unit is being set up under the Mega Power Project policy of the Government of India. On commissioning of the unit, 12 million units of electricity will be added to the grid of the power deficit state, every day.

With the commissioning of this unit, the cumulative generating capacity of the power station will be enhanced to 4,760 MW, making it India’s largest power generating station.

BHEL’s scope of work in the contract envisages design, engineering, manufacture, supply and erection & commissioning of Steam Generator and Steam Turbine Generator along with associated Auxiliaries and state-of-the-art Controls & Instrumentation. The equipment for the project will be manufactured at BHEL’s Trichy, Ranipet, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Bhopal Plants, while the company’s Power Sector – Western Region will be responsible for erection and commissioning of the equipment.

BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 600 MW rating in the sub-critical range and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. The company has also equipped itself to produce 660 MW / 700 MW / 800 MW thermal sets with supercritical parameters, and is shoring up its capability for higher rating Hydro sets and advanced class Gas Turbines to cater to upcoming market requirements.

BHEL has been committed to the nation’s power development programme and has reaffirmed its commitment to the Indian Power Sector by equipping itself by way of contemporary technology, state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and skilled technical manpower. Significantly, the company has established the capability to deliver power plant equipment of 20,000 MW per annum.
