NCC Expansion on Schedule, says Pallam Raju
Minister of State for Defence Dr MM Pallam Raju visited the NCC Republic Day Camp here today. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the expansion of the NCC from 13 lakhs to 15 lakhs was going as per plan. “It is heartening to learn that the expansion of NCC is on schedule and more than one dozen NCC units have been added this training year and similar raisings are planned in the ensuing year,” he said.Dr Pallam Raju also called for the broadbasing of the NCC to cover the villages. “I am sure the special emphasis being laid on broad-basing the NCC activities to expand its reach to the rural and semi urban areas by locating maximum new raisings in such areas will energize and give an opportunity to the youth of such areas in contributing their bit towards nation building”, he said.

The minister also lauded the NCC for “its pivotal role in imbibing in our youth the spirit of adventure and sports”. Dr Pallam Raju said that the introduction of the low cost games and the planned expedition to Mt Everest are worthy of special appreciation. He also congratulated the NCC for having lifted the prestigious Subroto Mukherjee football tournament cup 2011. Commending the community development and social service schemes undertaken by the NCC cadets, he said that their voluntary contribution in times of crisis and natural disasters to the victims of the July 2011 Mumbai blasts, earthquake in Sikkim and floods in Orissa has been noteworthy.

Earlier on his arrival the minister was presented an impressive ‘Guard of Honour’ by smartly turned out selected cadets followed by a brilliant Band Display of enchanting martial and other melodious musical tunes. Later, Dr Pallam Raju visited the Flag Area to witness the colourful depiction of various themes by State Contingents, an extraordinary thought brilliantly translated into realistic colourful models elaborately illustrated and displayed.

The talented cadets also presented a sterling cultural programme based on Indian culture and National Integration to the minister and other distinguished dignitaries.

Around 2,000 Cadets, both boys and girls drawn from 17 NCC Directorates covering all the States and Union Territories of the country, are participating in this RD Camp. The cadets will take part in a number of activities like Cultural, National Integration, Awareness and Institutional Training competitions during the nearly month long Republic Day Camp.
