BHEL EXPANDS ITS PRESENCE IN RAJASTHAN GETS NEW POWER GENERATING UNIT AT CHHABRA

Rajasthan gets new Power Generating unit with the commissioning of 250 MW Coal-based thermal power plant by BHEL at Chhabra

New Delhi, July 1: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved another milestone by successfully commissioning another 250 MW thermal unit in Rajasthan. The unit was commissioned at Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL)’s 2×250 MW Chhabra Thermal Power Project (TPP) Stage-II, located in Baran District of Rajasthan.

With the commissioning of this fourth 250 MW unit at Chhabra TPP, the capacity of the coal-based thermal power plant has gone up to 1,000 MW. BHEL has earlier commissioned three units of similar rating at the Stage I and Stage II of the power project.

Reposing confidence in BHEL’s proven technological excellence, RRVUNL had placed an order valued at nearly Rs.990 Crore on the company, for setting up two units of 250 MW each (Units 3&4) as Stage – II expansion project of Chhabra TPP.

BHEL’s scope of work in the contract envisaged design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of Steam Generators and Steam Turbine Generators and Associated Auxiliaries with state-of-the-art Controls & Instrumentation (C&I) system. The equipment for the project was supplied by BHEL’s Haridwar, Trichy, Ranipet and Bangalore plants, while BHEL’s Power Sector – Northern Region undertook erection and commissioning of the equipment.

BHEL has been a major partner of RRVUNL in its capacity addition program, having contributed 4,591 MW corresponding to 88% of the over-all installed Thermal & Gas capacity of the utility. In May, 2014, BHEL had commissioned the 160 MW gas-based combined cycle power plant of RRVUNL at Ramgarh.

Presently, BHEL is executing on EPC basis, a 2×660 MW coal-fired project based on eco-friendly supercritical technology at Suratgarh in Rajasthan. In addition, BHEL is executing the 2×700 MW Rajasthan Atomic Power Project of NPCIL in Rajasthan.

The in-house engineered 250 MW rating TG sets have established the engineering prowess of BHEL. The company has so far contracted 69 numbers of 250 MW sets, out of which 56 sets have already been commissioned. BHEL supplied sub-critical sets today form the back-bone of the Indian power sector and have been performing much above the national average as well as international benchmarks. These sets have very high level of indigenisation. Large number of such sets ensures easy availability of spares, besides familiarity of operating personnel.

BHEL supplied thermal sets fully meet the performance standards notified by CEA. As per a recent CEA study of the performance of sub-critical sets in the country, BHEL supplied sets have demonstrated a very low operating Heat rate implying less coal consumption  per unit of power produced.
