New Delhi: The center of IVF and Human Reproduction at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), today proudly announced the successful completion of 25 years of IVF.
On this occasion , Dr Harsh Vardhan , Union Minister for Science & Technology was the Chief Guest and felicitated , SGRH’S first IVF born, Garva, a young man of 25 now, along with many other IVF babies and their parents and families.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr D.S.Rana , Chairman (Board of Management ) , Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said , “On our silver jubilee, we are proud to be ranked as the number 1 hospital in northern India offering IVF services. Pre-implantation genetic screening has doubled the success rates of IVF for young patients, and greatly enhanced the outcome of older women above 37 years seeking IVF. Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) for all 24 chromosomes, done on a single cell, biopsied from an embryo , is the biggest advancement in this direction to select a chromosomally normal embryo from an abnormal one. In IVF, more than 50% embryos generated, have abnormal chromosome numbers even though they ‘look’ normal. Transferring such embryos into the women leads to recurrent IVF failure or if they do implant, lead to early pregnancy loss. PGS also helps indirectly in reducing the miscarriage rates, by avoiding transfer of embryos with an abnormal number of chromosomes that can be a major cause of miscarriages, especially in women above the age of 37.
According to Gaurav Majumdar , Chief Embryologist , Sir Ganga Ram Hospital , “we at our IVF centre at SGRH have already performed more than 50 IVF-PGS cycles in the last year, the highest in the country, and have managed to achieve a clinical pregnancy rate of more than 70% per cycle that is almost twice our average success rate of 40%. The patients that have benefitted the most from this advanced technique are older patients (37 years and above) and patients who have had multiple failed IVF cycles. Furthermore, PGS has successfully allowed the transfer of single embryos in these patients, which has consequently reduced the risk of multiple gestation i.e. twins or triplets. Therefore, PGS is allowing more and more patients to achieve a singleton pregnancy in the shortest possible time with a fewer number of miscarriages.”
According to Dr Abha Majumdar , Director & Head , Centre of IVF , Sir Ganga Ram Hospital , “Another big technological achievement at the IVF centre at SGRH, has been the first live birth of India in December 2015, after Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for a translocation defect (a cause for repeated spontaneous abortions) using array-CGH. Mrs. AB (name changed) had 4 abortions owing to translocation defect in her husband’s chromosomes. They had no other option than to use donor sperm from a semen bank which they did not want to use. Using this technology we could give them their own child using the husband’s own sperm. We already have 3 more such ongoing pregnancies. We have also performed PGD cycles for couples with single gene defects such as beta thalassemia, citrullinemia, spinal muscular atrophy and muscular dystrophy. PGD is a ray of hope for couples with single gene defects who otherwise are left with no option but to repeatedly abort an affected fetus.”
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis helps couples that are either carriers of translocations or genetic mutations, to conceive disease free babies. This technology enables the diagnosis of specific gene defects in embryos before a pregnancy has been established. As a result, selection and transfer of only normal, disease free embryos ensures normal conceptions and the couples are spared the option of terminating an affected pregnancy.
Gaurav Majumdar further added , “Egg freezing facility for fertility preservation allows women to defer child bearing. We at our center of IVF have already performed 51 oocyte cryopreservation cycles till date out of which 22 have been for the purpose of social egg freezing, 10 have been emergency freezing’s where the husbands sperm was not available on the day of IVF and 18 have been in Donor recipient cycles.
We reported the first live birth in northern India using frozen eggs in Feb 2009 for Mrs.AM. Subsequently, 28 women have utilized frozen eggs till date, out of which 7 women have conceived with an overall pregnancy rate of 25%.”
Today after 25 years, the center has more than 15,000 successful IVF procedures and over 5000 babies to its credit, and has grown to become one of best IVF centers in the country. This was the first centre to have a IVF Baby in Northern India. The centre not only provides the technology of ART but also medical and surgical fertility promoting services under one roof.
