M V KAMATH VETERAN JOURNALIST AND FORMER CHAIRMAN OF PRASAR BHARATI DIES AT 93

MANIPAL: Former chairman of Prasar Bharati and veteran journalist Madhav Vittal Kamath, popularly kmown as MV Kamath, died at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal on Thursday. He was 93.He was born on September 7, 1921 in Udupi.

Kamath was one of the earliest biographers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Kamath began his journalism career as a reporter with Free Press Journal in Bombay in 1946. When India won independence on the midnight of August 14, 1947, Kamath was present on the occasion and reported the event.

Kamath worked in many newspapers and magazines like Free Press Bulletin, Bharath Jyothi, and Press Trust of India. He also served as Sunday editor of The Times of India. He also served as Washington correspondent for the same paper between 1969 and 1978. He was Editor of the Illustrated Weekly of India, a magazine from the house of Bennett, Coleman and Co, from 1978-1981, which was closed later.

He was awarded Padma Bhushan. Kamath also wrote many books and biographies including that of prime minister Narendra Modi. He also wrote books on six banks such as Canara Bank, Corporation Bank, Union Bank, Bank of India and Saraswat Bank. He also wrote books on Sai Baba, philosophy and journalism. At the time of his death, he was writing a book titled Pain and Death, which could not be completed.

The funeral will be held Thursday evening. His body will be kept for public viewing at Nutana Ravindra Mandapa in MGM college from 1pm to 4pm and then will be taken to his ancestral house in Kadabettu, Udupi. It will be kept there for an hour after which the funeral will be held.
