Trial run underway of 20 MGD Waste Water Treatment Plant at Nilothi
Around 9 lac people to benefit with the commissioning of the plant
Generation of power from biogas expected to meet 50% power demand of Nilothi WWTP
Commissioning of the Plant an important step in reduction of pollution in Yamuna
Problem of sewer overflow will be addressed in Vikas Puri, Mundka, Uttam Nagar and Nangloi Jat Assembly Constituency

New Delhi:

The Delhi Jal Board has started the trial run of its newly constructed 20 MGD Waste Water Treatment Plant at Nilothi. The plant has been constructed at a cost of Rs 261 Crores. The Nilothi WWTP has been constructed with the aim of trapping the sewage from sub-drains, before they join into the Najafghar drain and treating the sewage before it outfalls in the River Yamuna. Thereby, leading to abatement of pollution in the river and benefitting around 9 lac people from the environmental point of view.
The Waste Water Treatment Plant will be operated with an automatic system using SCADA and is expected to provide tertiary level treatment to the wastewater trapped from the drains. The treated effluent will have high quality parameters of Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) which will be less than 10 mg/l.
The plant is presently under trial run and will be fully commissioned by the end of October, 2015. In order to cut down on its O&M costs and increase the power availability in the city, this plant will meet 50% of its power demand by captive biogas based power generation engines. Thus, it will run on clean energy and reduce air pollution. The sludge management unit capable of producing composed sludge will also be commissioned by March, 2016.
The Nilothi WWTP will benefit the following unauthorised colonies: Vikas Puri, Mundka, Uttam Nagar and Navgloi Jat assembly constituency. The sewerage network in these unauthorised colonies is also being laid in a phased manner under the Sewerage Master Plan 2031. The waste water flow generated from these unauthorised colonies, flowing through the local drains will be intercepted through the Interceptor Sewer line laid under the Interceptor Sewer Project which will be conveyed to the Nilothi WWTP Phase-II for treatment. The extended sewerage facilities will improve the environmental and hygenic conditions of these colonies and bring immense relief tothe people of the area.
Delhi Jal Board has been consistently making efforts to bring about marked improvement in its water and wastewater infrastructure so that it can provide efficient services to the residents of Delhi. Commissioning of this 20 MGD Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) at Nilothi will ensure that all the waste water that flows in the drain is first treated and only clean treated effluent is discharged into the river course, thus bringing down the sewage pollution load in the river Yamuna.
