New Delhi: Dr Deepak Chaudhary Director Sports Injury Centre Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi today said that sports injury centre has been approved as referral centre for elite Indian  athletes selected for the  next  Olympics games .He said that decision in this effect was taken recently in meeting held in new delhi among all the sports federations of  the country  and added that around 80 athlete from various streams have been preparing for next Olympics at different  venues of the country  .He said that the SIC is fully equipped and trained for handling all cases to deal with any injury to the   athletes  selected for the olympics and has kept state of readiness throughout day and night  and also told  that SIC was tertiary nodal centre during recently held Indian Premier Leagues and International Badminton Leagues .He said that SIC has been selected as  referral centre by  Sports Authoriy of India for all its national and international events .
He said that Sports Injury Centre will start a dedicated OPD  exclusively for the sports persons and added that it will help them in getting specialized personalized treatment without any hassles.He said  that it will mainly benefit the  young sports persons of schools and colleges belonging to Delhi and NCR .He said  that the timing of the exclusive OPD for the sports persons will be decided soon in consultations with various sports fedrations and  educations institutions of Delhi and NCR keeping in view of the suitability and convenience to the sports persons and organizers of the events .
Dr Deepak Chaudhary Director Sports Injury Centre Safdarjung Hospital New Delhi today said that  first batch of MD (Sports medicine) course at Sports Injury Centre Safdarjang Hospital  has been started  from the academic year 2015-16 .He said that Safdarjang Hospital is the first institution in a government setup in the country to  start MD in Sports Medicine under Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University from current academic session and added that  Starting of Sports Medicine, education at SIC will help to generate a pool of qualified doctors who will apart  from dealing with injury prevention and treatment, also help in devising sport specific protocols for performance enhancement.
He said that at present many patients from neighbouring countries and NRIs prefer to get treatment from SIC due to its  international service  quality and advanced treatment facilities at reasonable cost .He told that more than 50 overseas patients are treated in SIC evey month .He also told that more than 2000 personals belonging to para military forces has been treated by the centre so far who received acute injuries while playing or an overuse injury . He observed that these injuries can be avoided by  proper strengthening and  tonning of the muscles and added that injuries while participating in sports can be avoided by proper warm up sessions ,appropriate coaching ,right playing techniques and muscle strengthening .He said that bed strength  of the SIC is planned to be increased from present 35 bed to 44 beds during current financial year and added that new permanent faculty has been recently recruited in the centre .He told that more than 5000 patients visit the hospital monthly and on average about 175 patients get operated in each month which includes surgeries for acute sports injuries as well as  joint replacement in badly damaged joints .

He said that Sports Injury Centre   has also been approved for award of a fellowship (FNB) by the National Board of Examinations which is first of its type in the country. This fellowship is offered to post graduates in orthopaedics who wish to pursue further super-specialty training in the field of Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine.
On the academic front, the Centre has anchored a number of national and international conferences which have been attended and appreciated by the visiting faculty from various countries. The Centre is recognized by the International body of Sports Medicine for imparting training to young orthopaedic surgeons
He said that the  Sports Injury Centre at Safdarjang Hospital has evolved over the past 4 years as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ providing integrated surgical, diagnostic and rehabilitative services under one roof benefitting sports persons in particular as also the general public at large. During the last four years the team of doctors at SIC have performed more than 7000 complex surgeries. Some of these surgeries were very rare and have been performed for the first time not only in India but have also been the first globally. A few of such surgeries which can be named here are Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation, ALL (Anterolateral ligament of knee) Reconstruction, AC Joint Reconstruction, Tibial Spine Fixation using mini tight rope, Double bundle ACL/PCL Re-construction, Multiple Ligament Reconstructions of Knee, Double Row Rotator Cuff Repair, OATS, Meniscal Repairs etc.

Dr Deepak Chaudhary said that In keeping with its rich tradition of spreading knowledge, learning and skill on the specialized subject of sports injury and arthroscopy, the   Sports Injury Centre, Safdarjung Hospital is organizing 3rd edition of Delhi Arthroscopy Course – 2015 on 27th & 28th June, 2015. The programme includes an International Conference under the aegis of International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery & Sports Medicine (ISAKOS).
He said that the programme will see a rare feat of twenty five unedited live surgeries related to Knee & Shoulder Arthroscopy performed by eminent National and International faculty at Sports Injury Centre and live telecast of these surgeries has been organized for the benefit of all delegates present at the Conference venue i.e Le Meridien, New Delhi. The international faculty includes amongst the others Dr Mark Fergusson who has successfully handled operations in respect of  a number of international sports men including Gautam, Srinath, Kumble to name a few. The Indian faculty includes Dr Sanjay Desai from Mumbai who has operated upon
Mr. Shahrukh Khan. Besides Live Surgeries, the Course/ Conference will provide an opportunity to the delegates to observe and discuss all the practical aspects and important surgical tips involved in surgical procedures.

Dr Deepak Chaudhary said that the Centre has made a tremendous progress in providing integrated surgical, diagnostic and rehabilitative services under one roof for treatment of sports & related injuries and disorders. One of the very rewarding returns for the Centre has been its track record of successfully treating and rehabilitating many sportspersons who have taken back to their active sporting lives after their surgeries/treatment. Sports Injury Centre is one out of only three in India  approved by ISAKOS as an approved teaching and training centre for young surgeons.
The Centre  regularly conducts Arthroscopic Cadaveric Workshops at VMMC and Safdarjang Hospital where  orthopedics surgeons from all over India and abroad take part to  enhance their arthroscopy skills.
The SIC has taken the initiative to host a number of international arthroscopy conferences in the past. This is the third edition of Delhi Arthroscopy Course. In this course the delegates are exposed to an extravaganza of wide array of Live Surgeries, a rare feat which enhances the learning experience of other doctors from different areas who want to enhance their skills.
Dr Deepak Chaudhary said that the Inauguration of the Conference will be held on 27th June, 2015 at 7:30 PM Hotel Le Meridien, Windsor Place, New Delhi. Director General of Health Services shall be the Chief Guest. Shri C.K. Mishra and Dr. Arun Panda, Addl. Secretary in the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare shall be the Guest of Honour. Shri Bishan Singh Bedi, a revered sports personality, Shri Sushil Kumar, Olympiad wrestler, and Ms. Anjum Chopra, former captain of Indian women cricket team will be attending  the inaugural function as distinguished guests. On this occasion, a souvenir carrying  messages from the Prime Minister, Shri  Narendra Modi, the health Minister, and other dignitaries , besides including some latest research papers on the subject matter  would be  released by the chief guest and shared with all the participants.
Eminent sports persons who have got treatment in Sports Injury Centre:
1.   Chaobi Devi, an international Wushu player was operated for ACL reconstruction. She won Gold medal at an international event post surgery.
2.   Thyagaraj Basanta was operated for Bankart’s repair and rotator cuff repair. He won won a Gold medal at international Police Meet in weightlifting.
3.   Devrath an international wrestling player was operated for lateral meniscus tear. Post surgery he won the title of Bharat Kesari.
4.   Parvesh Rathi, a national basketball player was operated for ACL reconstruction (Left). He resumed his sports and won a bronze medal at National Games in Feb 2015.
5.   Rajnibala, a Judo player was operated for ACL reconstruction (Left). She resumed her sports to win bronze medal in International South Asian Championship (Nepal) in April 2014.
6.   Anuradha was operated for ACL reconstruction (Right) and won Bronze Medal in Police Games 2012 post surgery.
7.   Manoj Gehlot, a Judo player won Bronze medal in Senior national championship in 2012-13.
8.   Kuldeep Singh, a Gold Medallist at commonwealth Games was later operated for arthroscopic removal of loose body from his elbow. Two months back he has been operated again for Double bundle ACL reconstruction.
9.   Other eminent personalities who have received treatment at SIC are, Raghvendra Singh Rathore (Shooting), Sushil Kumar (Wrestling), Kripa Shankar (Coach of Sushil Kumar), Jagbeer Singh (Hockey)
